Mostly self-taught, Steve has created a unique style and sophistication amongst the potters of the Catawba Valley. He learned a bit from potter Michael Calhoon of Bolick's Pottery in Blowing Rock, NC, but really it was the pottery collecting fever that he was infected with in the late 1980's. Early on he signed his wares Stephen Abee, but soon it was just Steve. Also he sometimes marks the pots with his initials SEA. This 4 color swirl devil face jug is a truly monumental work. Per Steve it was the largest single turned pot he ever made (as opposed to capping 2 pieces). For a number of years he was famous for his wide open mouths of his faces. This face more balances the facial features with its closed set of teeth. Also the symmetry is really nice. The devil was of the top picks from a recent kiln opening. Signed both on the base and with his stamp on the devil's forehead. Stands 15 inches tall. Wonderfully out-of-the-kiln superb condition.
