Since
establishing himself in Pittsboro, NC, in 1983, Mark is always in the news for his work
or contributions to North Carolina pottery. Several years ago he also built a massive alkaline kiln to complement his salt glaze one. Hewitt runs a full-scale pottery production
business with apprentices and has advised many talented now very successful potters names of which include Daniel Johnston, Alex Matisse, Matt Jones, and Joseph Sand.
Unlike many contemporary potters that are included on southernpots.com, Mark Hewitt’s pottery is very much
functional and most definitely decorative. This vase, standing 16 inches tall by 8 inches wide in the lower bulbous portion is a beautiful Hewitt pot. One on side of the vase, glass was utilized to gracefully decorate the body of the vase. The glass appears as and/or infuses into what is the classic orange peel (fly ash) effect in salt glaze firing. The side away from the fire has a smooth grainy darker finish. From the bottom there is the distinct footing, rising into the bulbous center, and finishing with a circular extended lip. Marked with his stamp and most recent kiln firing (82). The condition is overall excellent with a couple kiln sticks on the base (a picture is included that shows one stick barely (i.e. 1/16 inch) notable from the side at the base.
