Seldom does one have the opportunity to purchase a Kim Ellington face jug. For many years he shifted away from this mostly contemporary Catawba Valley form. But a few Christmas kiln openings ago he surprised us all and began turning a handful that were fired in his wood kiln. Kim definitely learned a few tricks of the trade from Burlon Craig, but then went on to create his own tradition of pottery. Initially he fired at the famous Hart Square, moving on later to build his own shop and kiln at his home in the Catawba Valley. The big floor vases and jars with the dark alkaline glaze and dripping glass are always outstanding examples of his works. This face jug has wonderfully balanced glass runs, rock teeth, and a classic alkaline glaze. The face also just has a great expression and all the incised face detail. Signed on the back shoulder with his full name (well he uses his middle name) which is pretty uncommon as normally he signs his pots with his GKE initials. Also 2 Kim 'kiln' marks grace the beginning and end of his name. The face jug stands 11 inches tall and is mint.
