North State Pottery of Sanford, NC was founded by a Mrs. Rebecca Cooper when she employed the pottery operation's first potter, Jonah Owen in 1924. Unlike so many other NC art pottery enterprises, North State had quite a staying power and remained open until 1965 (for its last five years it was run by WN Owen as Pine State Pottery). The variety of glazes and forms is quite remarkable. There was a short period of salt glazed pots, although that rapidly shifted to the universal art pottery lead-bases glazes so critical to the multitude of glaze colors. This 2 handle vase comes from the second period of the pottery, 1926-1938, where a second stamp was used for marking wares. The glaze is chrome red, the one most collectors would argue is one of the most beautiful of NC art pottery. It is very rare to find a marked chrome red glazed pot and being 2nd Stamp North State is remarkable. Chrome red firings resulted in a wide variety of finishes, from a near orange to almost total black. The ideal finish were the drippy brighter reds. This vase has a really spectacular shiny drippy red and touch of black finish to it. The symmetry with the 2 graceful handles is pretty neat. The vase stands 5.5 inches tall and with the handles a max width of 5 inches. The condition is near excellent with a tiny glaze pop or flake on the rim and 2 small flakes at the base edge (as seen in the picture with the greater of the two measuring 1/4 by 1/8 inch).
