CR Auman Pottery began as an operation to create the standard Randolph County North Carolina salt glaze utilitarianware in 1922.  Markets change though and as with other NC pottery businesses, Charlie Auman also had to change with the times as the demand for jugs, crocks, and churns waned.  CR shifted his operation to begin producing lead-glazed art pottery, primarily through the work of Wrenn Cole.  And rest is one of the great stories of NC art pottery.  Many forms were developed to sell to the tourism and export market, particularly to the wealthier northern US cities.  At times the wares were simply glazed with yellow lead glaze, although people love color, particularly cobalt.  Hence a very attractive example such as this 'low bowl' decorated with cobalt in eight places on the vase shoulder.  The vase is not a simple pot ... there is an expertly tooled pulled rim as well as a distinctly formed footing.  As with much of the Auman pottery, glaze was also applied to the base.  The low bowl stands 4.5 inches tall with a diameter at its widest point 6.5 inches.  The condition is overall excellent with a tiny flake on the lip and a couple of small flakes at the footing.  These delicate lead glazes are prone to this light flaking.
